But I really like ones which holds on the top so I don't have to fish it out. Used a starkist "outer edge" one for a few years, but really it was crap at actually opening cans, though when it did it was safe, resealable, and sanitary.... still. Haven a OXO now, does a great job at opening, but I've gotten sliced up (i'm careless, what can I say) and I have to fetch the lid out.

FWIW I've had two of these OXO Steel openers for at least 5 years (probably longer) and they work great. They're a little pricey for manual openers but got them at BB&B with coupons. I've opened a dozen 28 oz. cans of tomatoes at one sitting on more than on occasion (when I make a 5x batch of marinara to can) and never had an issue with them as far as hand strength required or ease of use. The lids do have sharpish edges, though, so that might be a deal breaker for some. Doesn't bother me though and I'm pretty clumsy in the kitchen.

I have two of the OXOs as well. Better even than any of the others.
I remember running into this older gentlemen in a kitchen store In Portland. He was looking for an electric can opener. I tried to convince him the OXO is totally better and easier to use.
I don't think he believed me but it's true.

BTW, I have the same OXO models that Emilie showed in her Amazon link;
the instructions say hand wash only but I put mine in the d/w all the time.
The cutting wheel gets grungy and I don't like to transfer the cooties from one can to another.

About a year ago I saw an ad somewhere about a battery operated can opener that is set on top of the can, you push a button, then you push the button to stop it, and it's the type that you get no sharp edges with. I was wondering how long the 2 AA batteries would last. I looked on Amazon, and found many of the same type of openers, and some used 4 AA batteries, which seemed better. I got one for $14.99, and they've gone up $5. I got it for my Mom, who has trouble with a manual opener, but figured I'd try it, to see how well it worked, and how long those batteries lasted! I liked it so much that I kept that one, and got another for her! lol I use rechargable batteries, which don't last as long as alkaline, but I only had to replace them with fresh batteries twice, the last time just recently, and it was just getting a little slow, not running out entirely. I just put it on the can, push the button, continue whatever else I'm doing, and when it has gone around 360°, and finished the cut, the sound changes slightly, and I press the button and stop it, revove it from the top, and remove the top. The magnet on this doesn't hold the lid, but that's no big deal. Here is the model I got:

Seems like it would be better as a wall-mount. Wonder why they haven't created one?

There would be no advantage in wall mounting as the can remains stationary during opening. Takes a lot less room this way, clever design.

Oh, yeah I suppose they could just add a cord instead of wall mounting. But haven't done that either ....

Why would you want a cord, Fuzzy? As I noted, it takes a long time to kill the batteries - many months, though, admittedly, I don't use a lot of canned goods. And a cord would have to turn the 360° with the opener, while the can sits on the counter.
