Yeah, they're fried separately (as many meatballs are). The ones in that picture are a bit overcooked, actually. Guess I didn't word that properly, sorry. I meant to say they are not simmered in the sauce after frying. Mary

Mary,
No, they weren't. The recipe didn't direct me to do so. If you try simmering them in the sauce for a few minutes, please let me know how they turn out.

I will. I found some recipes for them and they look very good. One recipe had the meatballs simmer in the sauce for an hour but the others just said add to sauce. I think I will need to find an occasion for these (i.e. when Miss Fussy-I-Won't-Eat-Fish-or-Anything-That-Touches-Fish is away), they speak to me.

I recently made Brioche aux Chocolate form Joanne Chang's "Flour" cookbook...it's suppose to have raisins...but Jaden doesn't like raisins...go figure...they were good...I added 1/2 vanilla bean into the pastry cream...I thought the filling was way too much because it was oozing out but it turned out fine...I used bittersweet chocolate chips...definitely will make again... Mahalo for your kind words....
I would love to make her "Vanilla Cream Filled Doughnuts"...they look wonderful but they have to be served immediately...which is a bummer since I would like to give them to a couple of friends as gifts...are they inedible after one day?
